Latest!

On the business verses doing the business.  Gidday.  As usual updating the website isn't the sexiest thing on the planet for myself.  Doing the business is far more fun.  The last six weeks fishing in the inner gulf has been magic, and the water temperature is gradually increasing.  I assess we are a month behind at least as to the temperature, temperament and location of the fish.  NE of Tiri in 30-40 metres has just simply been going off.  Only one trip has had to be curtailed of any significance yet the team still got there limit.

Traditionally bait fishing still works (of course - it was never broken) but by golly the soft plastics and recently the new metal slow jigs have been absolutely getting nailed.  A trip last weekend I was on the slow jigs only and just got smashed on most drops.  It was a case of trying not to catch a fish.  A dam good example to the chaps onboard of what quality gear and location location location can do when it is firing.  (See photo gallery for sample of the best fish I personally caught, over two consecutive days.

We've a bit of spare capacity, but not a lot.  Contact Phil if you are keen to get out there.

Phil 021 370388.  12 Dec 09  (Oh yeah - if you are wondering why I'm updating on a Sat pm, there's 25kt+NW out there)  Tight lines.

Seems like only yesterday when I made the time to update the website.  What a great summer we've had here in Auckland, and still it continues.  The sea remains warm at 22deg and plenty of fish about.  The scallop season has just completed, as at 31 March 09 with quality fat scallops for the sampling for those that way inclined.  Just goes to show the benefit of moving the season right a few months to which the MAF exercised some smart and right judgment.    Hopefully the next smart legislation will be revoking the present caveat over the using of lassos for crayfish!  Watch this space....

Having had the pleasure of only last night returning from Sydney engaging fishing talk with some locals always cements how fortunate we are this side of the ditch with regards to the local recreational fishing industry and ability.  Long may we look after our sea stocks!  Small world as well, as discussing boating with an Australian and long story short, he too had a stabicraft 630HT.  Shows even the Aussy's do have some brains and good taste.

A trip out two weekends ago was a pleasure with a young family and their two young children.  This dad and charter operator always gets a buzz in providing a great trip out for families and moreso in watching and assisting young kids haul up and in their personally caught fish.  Equally for dad in having a play with a nice rat kingi, to which was released.

All good and catch you out there.

Gosh, just where does the time go.  Another year gone by, another daughter for the skipper, and still we're having dam fun out there on the water.

A recent three day trip out to Gt Barrier was outstanding fun, albeit I failed to take the camera for those quality shots I should have taken.  Fantastic weather on the Fri and Sat, yet we paid for it on the trip back across on the Sun.  30knots on the beam, yet Shagga eats up that stuff for breakfast and some!

Recently the big workups in the deeper water have been just fantastic to get amongst the good fish.  Soft plastics have been awesome fun in this stuff and equally large kawhai were also landed which are well worth keeping for the smoker.  I'm yet to land a Kingi onboard so far this season, but eagerly awaiting the first strike.

Last Saturday, whilst fishing at No8 buoy we lost a huge fish - and assuming a very large shark.  Discussing the fishing with other operators down at the City they equally reported large bronze whalers about.

With the silly season upon us, we're continuing to work through and over the break, with essentially on Xmas Day and New Years day off the water.  We've still some vacancies for mid week trips so please look us up.  Have fun out there.  Merry Christmas and we look forward to having you onboard.

Who hasn't had enough of this dam wind yet.  We've managed only two trips out on the water working over the past month, which isn't flash!  The first to Anchorite was a hard day at the office, yet enjoyable for the crew and more recently fishing the outgoing tide on the outside of Kawau with a Westerly wind was certainly a heck of a lot kinder.  Reports I'm hearing and reading are consistent in that once out in the deep with the workups fishos are having a wicked time.  Elsewhere bag limits are not tested!

Recreationally I did a dive in a old favorite spot and couldn't believe how few scallops were around at the start of the season.  Also local reports from a number of sources have all confirmed historic good beds from last season are holding very few scallops.  Guess the 12 July storm that hit the region may be a significant contribution factor, as I understand a heap of scallops washed up on local beaches.

With regards to cray fish, labour weekend generally as a good indicator that the majority of the hens should have shed their eggs, so we'll be proactive in the hunt for some cray.

Looking at the weather reports now for Labour weekend, there's supposedly a heap of wind around yet again, so I may sneak out myself for a recreational fish tonight.

2nd and 3rd November, should the wind conditions enable - I'm heading over to the Barrier for a few days fishing/diving.  Hopefully this trip will eventuate, and I can report back on some quality fishing and diving in the near future.

Tight lines.

Seems like forever since I updated the website, which in part is good because we've been very busy, with AMAC and other ventures we are involved with.  With the weather finally turning for the worse that has equally had an impact on our primary operations.  What a fantastic summer in the end, after a somewhat lousy start.  The Indian Summer over May was just great.  This past season has once again predominately been a fishing and dive focus, with certain a drive to do other activities next season.

The building of all associated setline and accessories has also been a growing sideline industry and whilst majority of sales are conducted directly through Trademe, through a clever, smart photo has lead to direct sales and equally charters as a result of follow up service that I've now become renown for already.  The two operations are complimenting each other quite nicely.

Soft plastics are certainly flavour of the season with the Aussy team over for the NZ Boat show.  I've one rig which I don't hire out, which if the onboard fishing chaps are having a hard time, the soft plastic thrown over has worked almost without fail.

Have fun, tight lines and to my regulars have a great few months off, as some aren't into the winter fishing and those divers who prefer the winter, we look forward to having you back onboard shortly.

Oh yeah, my crew is expanding yet again with another wee Wiigy due any day now.  My justification for a larger Stabicraft funnily enough wasn't supported by my business and equally partner in life.

Check out 'Your Crew' within a fortnight and you'll see the new crew member update.

A very successful afternoon, into early evening fishing charter with Mr Martin Hansby and crew netted their limit of snapper within a few hours of fishing on Sat 28 Oct 06 on the worm beds south of Tiri.  Pink snapper catchers seemed the best option after heavy ground baiting and berleying up for an hour of so.  To fill in the remainder of the charter we attempted to catch some kawhai, which remained elusive.

Regardless, 36 snapper, with a number of really good fish had the team taking home a great feed for the family and friends.

Funny though, and it occurs so frequently, one crew member just couldn't catch a cold - until the last few fish.  His brand new rods are probably for sale on TradeMe as you are reading this, however out of sympathy I lent Garth some of the boat gear and he was on!  Cheers chaps, Catchya at months end.

Historic.

Soft plastics are the bomb.  I recently snuck out for an early morning fish locally to give them a whirl.  Outstanding and great fun.  Regrettably as a business I haven't sufficient gear - YET - for clients but of course happy to do any fishing charter with clients using their own gear.  The only issue is given the type of fishing with casting and retrieving the ideal soft plastic action is best suited to only a few rods in action from a boat at the same time.  Those clients of mine who enjoy just a few onboard, please give consideration to this type of fishing in the future.  Further good news is that the fish are definitely on the way in, with the local islands now inhabiting some fish, with two good size kingis caught last week.

Cray locally are still in berry with expectation post Labour weekend, they'll hopefully of shed their eggs with the hens thereafter great for the catching.  Also some local scallop beds still not up to their best condition.  I do however know where the best size and condition scallop beds are - and they're real close!

The strong SW winds are likely to be around for at least the next month which will slow things down a bit.  Today I was suppose to be going to Little Barrier for a dive charter, however the wind literally blew us (and most other operators I suspect) off the water.

We're looking forward to a great season ahead and have some new toys for our clients to play with.  We can now hire out two sea-scooters, kayaks, windsurfers, ski-biscuits and I'm also more than willing and able to instruct in waterskiing, windsurfing.  Now is also the time to check out your camping gear, or enquire about using ours.  Offshore camping safaris are only just around the corner, with after labour weekend the intention to get some local families together and out to Motorua for a weekend away with our kids.
